What are the pitfalls in filling in our missing pieces?

  • We don’t know where to start.
  • We don’t make time for it. We will have time for it “one day.”
  • Or, we think, “my family will know what to do.”

If we don’t fill in the missing pieces of our traditional financial plans…

  • How will our family know what we want at ‘the end?’
  • If we want to leave a gift to our church or synagogue, but never get around to updating our Will, our wish is lost.
  • Because we didn’t have an Advance Directive, our loved ones may grapple with making hard, even excruciating decisions about our care.
  • Without a Power of Attorney, our loved ones can’t access our accounts. How will bills get paid?
  • Without a Will, our estate goes into probate and our family will have to wait months through the process.
  • If we don’t consider our long-term care options, will our loved ones deplete all our savings to care for us?
  • How will our family pay for our funeral?
  • How will they know our wishes for our ‘celebration’? Who we’d like to speak? Or, be there?
  • How will our grandkids know our stories? If we never write them down…

Unfortunately, we don’t make time to think about these things.

We’ll have time “one day.”

Or, we rely on the statement that our loved ones “will know what to do.”

Today is that “one day” to get your pieces done!

Jody Giles

Jody Giles is the author of the Missing Pieces Plan, a book designed to help people plan for end-of-life. The “missing pieces” are what Jody feels are the most important pieces in a financial plan however, they are often the most neglected. When included, these pieces offer the greatest sense of peace of mind and is a priceless gift to loved ones.

Jody attained her CPA and CFP® licenses shortly after graduating with a masters in taxation from the University of Texas at Austin. She has dedicated almost 20 years advising families on their financial and philanthropic plans.

After a cross country move and other life events, Jody realized there were many “pieces” missing in her own family’s plan and that no resource existed to help fill in those pieces. She was driven to write the Missing Pieces Plan and help other families fill in their missing pieces and gain peace of mind.
